Captain Rudd

a Biblical thought...
"The person who knows my commandments and keeps them, that's who loves me. And the person who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and make myself plain to him." (John 14:21)

a Book thought...
So the way to get holy, the way to become like Christ, is to spend time with Him. (p170 Munn)
a Dave thought...
THE Federal Government will consider banning ATMs in gaming venues as part of a declaration of war on problem gambling. The Government will also look at reducing poker-machine spin rates – slowing the money spent in a given hour – and introducing smart-card technology (where gaming machines are operated using cashless cards which allow patrons to program the amount of time and money they spend).
In a move certain to pit Canberra against state premiers, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has commissioned Family and Community Services Minister Jenny Macklin to look at ways to better protect problem gamblers.
Ms Macklin has already held talks on a national pokies solution with industry players and critics including gambling activist and World Vision chief executive the Reverend Tim Costello.
It is also believed the Government is considering a push by Mr Costello for the Productivity Commission to review its 1999 report into Australia's gambling and pokies industry.
"The Prime Minister has asked me to investigate ways of tackling problem gambling," Ms Macklin said last night.
"Problem gambling can wreck lives. It hurts not only the person with the addiction but the people around them.
I'm loving Rudd more and more! This whole reliance on gambling income has been increasing especially in Victoria over the last 10 years. To have our new PM come in and admit straight up that he hates pokies and is going to do something about it is refreshing. So yeah I'm a Rudd fan, for three reasons already...

1. he was willing to say sorry

2. he is acknowledging that binge drinking is rife and is tackling this epidemic

3. he hates pokies and is making sure that states don't rely on them any longer

The way Kevin Rudd is willing to stand up for the lost, the least, and the last, I think he is worthy of being a part of The Salvation Army. So I'd like to propose that we commission Rudd as a Captain and appoint him as CO of Canberra Citadel.

Just a thought.

I think he might need a few more credentials than these to be made a Captain in TSA but at least he is trying to change a few of the things that needed attention. Interesting blog.

Another great blog Dave! I also like how he's signed us up to the Kyoto Protocol & going to bring our troops home from Iraq!

What a suprise! A politician telling us what we want to hear. Were you loving Rudd when he was planning to reduce the carers allowance to zero.

You don't need to be a Christian to be commissioned now?

Great blog Dave!!! It's so true about how he's trying to go out there and make a difference for those who have been forgotten by previous Governments... and in response to the carers allowance - that's not entirely true anon - he wasn't going to scrap it, he's just looking into it. Lump sum payments (or pay-offs as we called them in my last job) aren't overly useful to people as for every person that uses it wisely, there are 10 people who don't even realize where it's gone. Increasing the weekly/fortnightly amount is a much wiser way of easing the strain on carers and people reliant on Centrelink payments.

Must disagree Sarah. not really the forum for this discussion however, for many people on a limited income a one of lump sum payment is something they have never had before. Some of the people I know have bought new electrical appliances for the first time ever, been able to buy their children new clothes, a friend even told me they ate lamb chops that week and to top it off a frozen cheesecake.

A few extra dollars is not even noticed by most...

Yes some will waste it but they are not the majority.

Even for myself the lump sum payment means we can actually have a holiday.

Loved the blog!

However (and don't you hate it when people add a 'however'), I'm pretty sure that the banning of atms at pokies veues isn't coming into effect until 2012!!!! However (!!!!), I could be wrong. (That happens on very rare occasions. Ho.) If true, why can't it happen sooner?

Robyn Clinch said...

Well, I really did make a mistake, didn't I?!!!!

I meant reducing the atms, not banning them. Though wouldn't that be cool, hey?

That would be great! we could all go and get drunk and then move onto a strip club to celebrate...

Prime Minister Rudd would make a good Officer in The Salvation Army as you say Dave. He's passionate, loves the Lord and believes that Jesus died for his sins. He has a heart for the last, lost and least. He sees the things that are absolutely ruining the lives of Australians and he is causing the government to address the issues. My guess is that people are afraid of him, because he is a mover and a shaker. But I believe we need it!

Can you imagine what would happen if we spent as much time praying for him as we do complaining about him??

God, please bless our leader, Kevin Rudd. May He lead in Your truth and may you use him in mighty and powerful ways! I'm believin' it Lord! Hallelujah!
